A conference keynote without live polling is a TED talk — fine, but the audience is passive. With three well-placed polls, the same talk becomes a conversation. Here's the playbook.
Three mechanics, three placements
Opening (minute 1–2): word cloud — "describe today's biggest challenge in one word." Live build of the cloud is the icebreaker. Middle (minute 20–25): opinion poll — "of these three approaches, which would you bet on?" Three options, multi-choice. Closing (minute 40–45): Q&A with upvoting — "submit your question; everyone votes which I answer first." Always use audience-driven Q&A; pre-screened ones are dishonest and audiences sense it.
Tools and tradeoffs
Checked 25 September 2026. Mentimeter — polished and familiar to keynote audiences; Basic has no participant cap, at $11.99 per presenter a month on the US list, billed yearly. Slido — best for Q&A and for conferences run on Cisco Webex; Slido Professional covers 1,000 participants for $600 a year. AhaSlides — lower paid prices, billed monthly or yearly. Quizotic — the lightest join page measured (267 KB), but its free plan seats 50 per session and Pro (500 per session) is planned and not yet on sale, so today it suits breakouts and workshops rather than a 1,000-seat hall.
The crowded-hall pitfall
In a 1000-seat hall the Wi-Fi is shared and saturated, and a thousand phones trying to pull Mentimeter's 597 KB page at once will not all succeed — Kahoot's 2.85 MB certainly will not. Quizotic's 267 KB is the lightest of the tools measured. Always test the audience join with 50+ phones before the keynote; a poll that doesn't load on stage is a public failure.
