Live polling for conferences & keynotes

Word clouds, Q&A, opinion polls. The 30-second mechanics that change the room.

TL;DR

  • Live polling = the single highest-leverage engagement add to a keynote.
  • Three mechanics: opening word cloud, mid-talk opinion poll, closing Q&A with upvote.
  • Tools: Quizotic (INR), Mentimeter, Slido, AhaSlides.
  • Mistake to avoid: more than 4 polls in a 45-minute keynote — diminishing returns.

A conference keynote without live polling is a TED talk — fine, but the audience is passive. With three well-placed polls, the same talk becomes a conversation. Here's the playbook.

Three mechanics, three placements

Opening (minute 1–2): word cloud — "describe today's biggest challenge in one word." Live build of the cloud is the icebreaker. Middle (minute 20–25): opinion poll — "of these three approaches, which would you bet on?" Three options, multi-choice. Closing (minute 40–45): Q&A with upvoting — "submit your question; everyone votes which I answer first." Always use audience-driven Q&A; pre-screened ones are dishonest and audiences sense it.

Tools and tradeoffs

Mentimeter — polished, USD pricing, brand-familiar to keynote audiences. Slido — best if conference uses Cisco Webex. Quizotic — INR billing, ~80KB participant page (matters in 1000-person halls with crowded Wi-Fi), GST invoices for Indian conferences. AhaSlides — cheapest USD option.

The crowded-hall pitfall

In a 1000-seat hall, Wi-Fi is shared and saturated; audience phones struggle to load 300KB Mentimeter pages simultaneously. ~80KB pages join in seconds. Always test audience join with 50+ phones before the keynote — a poll that doesn't load on stage is a public failure.

Frequently asked

How many polls is too many?

3–4 in a 45-minute keynote. More than that and audience attention turns to phones, not stage.

Should I pre-screen Q&A?

No. Trust the upvote. Pre-screened Q&A breaks audience trust the moment they realize.

How do I project the live results?

Switch to the host screen on the conference projector, embed the live results page; keep your slides on a separate browser tab and switch when needed.
