How to run polls in virtual events

Zoom, Teams, Webex — patterns that work, tools that integrate.

TL;DR

  • Native polls (Zoom, Teams) are basic; external tools (Mentimeter, Quizotic) are richer.
  • Embed the poll join link in meeting chat — saves typing.
  • Open with a word cloud, end with Q&A. Spread other polls across the talk.
  • For Indian audiences, anonymous Q&A is the highest-leverage element.

Virtual events live and die on engagement. Polls are the simplest engagement primitive. Here's the practical setup for Zoom, Teams, and Webex.

Native vs external tools

Zoom's native polls cover single-choice and multi-choice — fine for simple "yes/no" and "which of these" formats. They don't do word clouds, ranking, or Q&A. Teams native is similar. Webex has deeper polling but is enterprise-only. For richer engagement, external tools (Mentimeter, AhaSlides, Quizotic, Slido) layer on top.

Setup pattern

Pre-event: create polls in your tool (Quizotic, Mentimeter). Get the join link or PIN. In the meeting agenda, mark when each poll runs. During: paste the join link in meeting chat 30 seconds before each poll — audience joins via the link. Show results live by sharing the host screen.

Patterns that work

Open with a word cloud (icebreaker). Mid-talk opinion poll. End with anonymous Q&A. 3 polls in a 45-min meeting is the sweet spot. More feels like marketing.

Frequently asked

Can audiences join without leaving the meeting?

Yes — they open the poll link in a phone browser while staying on the meeting. Or they split-screen on laptop.

Best tool for Zoom?

Quizotic, Mentimeter, AhaSlides all work via shared link. None has full Zoom-app integration; Mentimeter is closest.
